Do you fall sick often? Or does your child fall sick too easily? Anybody can get sick whether it’s a baby, a teen, an adult, or an old person. It all comes down to our dietary and lifestyle choices. These two things impact our immune system which is ultimately responsible for protecting us.

The immunity system is an essential part of one’s body and is crucial for our survival. Without it, our bodies would become open for attack by foreign bodies. There are various ways by which immunity can be boosted.

What is the immune system?

The immunity system is a defense mechanism present in our bodies for the purpose of keeping us healthy. It involves various biological structures and processes. It is spread through the entire body by an extensive network of cells and tissues. It consists of Red blood cells, antibodies, complement system, the lymphatic system, the spleen, the thymus, and the bone marrow.

Types of immune systems

  • Innate immunity system

We are born with this system and it gets activated the moment we are born. It is the first to respond whenever a pathogen enters. It includes the skin, eye’s cornea, mucous membrane along the lines of respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts.

  • Adaptive immunity system

It is developed when exposed to microbes and not inherent by the body. With the help of the above system, antibodies are made and it removes the bacteria. Making of antibodies takes many days. But once made it stays in the human body. After the first exposure, it retains memory of bacteria and fights it.

  • Passive immunity system

It is that system which is not innately present in the body rather borrowed from other sources. It doesn’t last long. Like, a newborn baby gets antibodies from the mother through placenta or breastfeeding.

How does the immunity system work?

The immunity system can easily identify between the body’s original cells and foreign cells. It does so by detecting the proteins on the surface of the cells. Own cell is ignored and the foreign cell is attacked. Once an antibody is created a copy of it remains in the body. So if the same pathogen enters, it can be dealt with rapidly.

Following activities weaken the immunity system:-

  • Sedentary lifestyle

Not being active enough lowers the quality of the immune system to fight pathogens.

Immune system

  • Smoking

It badly affects the heart and lungs. It not only invites more harmful viruses but also depletes the quality of fighting against the existing ones.

  • Drinking

How well the immunity system functions depend on the working of the organs and tissues associated with it. Drinking reduces its efficiency.

  • Dietary habits

It’s very important to know what we are eating and how much quantity as it affects our defense system.

Ways to boost our immune system naturally:-

Include broccoli, ginger, garlic, spinach in one’s diet as they enhance the immunity system. Citrus fruits increase the production of RBC’s. Red bell peppers have 3 times more vitamin C as compared relatively. These are the best natural immunity booster.

It is very important to get adequate hours of sleep in a day. Sleeping replenishes the immune system.

It increases the effectiveness of vaccines by reducing inflammation in the body. The generation of RBC’s happens more regularly.

It plays a vital role in causing an imbalance in hormones. Due to this the biological processes involved get hampered. One should engage in activities like meditation, yoga, or journaling.

In a nutshell, the immune system is the reason that we are alive, and boosting it naturally is an investment we are making in ourselves in the long run.
