Taking care of our oral hygiene is essential for the general well being and for the quality of life. It’s an important component of our Health. Taking care of it is just as important as the rest of the body. We need oral hygiene because it can prevent us from getting infected by gum problems.

According to the WHO, about 60-90% of children and nearly every adult suffers from dental cavities. As per the definition given by the American Dental Association

Oral health refers to “the completely functional, structural, aesthetic, physiologic and psychosocial state of well being and is essential to an individual’s overall health”.

Poor Oral hygiene

The reason behind poor Oral hygiene is the individual’s neglect towards their body particularly the mouth. The person fails to adopt good Oral hygiene habits such as brushing, flossing, etc.  The bacteria present in our mouth is in very low quantity. But a High sugar intake creates conditions for acid-producing bacteria to exist. This acid dissolves the tooth enamel leading to the dental cavity.

The bacteria around the gum line thrive is called the plague. It gets collected, hardens, and then travels down the teeth if not removed regularly by brushing and flossing. This can damage the gums and cause gingivitis. It can make the gums swell and bleed whenever you brush or floss.

Oral Hygiene

Sometimes due to increased inflammation, the gum tries to pull away from the teeth. This process creates pockets which if left untreated collect pus in it. This becomes a more advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis.

As periodontitis progresses, the infection caused can move to your jaws and bones and result in inflammatory conditions in the whole body.

There are many factors that contribute to poor Oral hygiene. Like:-

  1. Poor brushing habits
  2. Very regular snacking on sugar items and cold drinks.
  3. Not eating healthy food items. Like fruits and vegetables.
  4. Smoking/ tobacco
  5. Family history
  6. Diabetes
  7. Inflections such as HIV or AIDS in some cases.

Sensitive teeth

One is said to have sensitive teeth when he /she feels pain or extreme discomfort whenever hot or cold beverages are consumed. It is also called dentin hypersensitivity. Some people have sensitive teeth due to thin enamel.

Oral cancer

Detection of oral cancer can be done only by a dentist. This cancer affects the gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, and the hard and soft palate. Smoking and chewing tobacco are the foremost reasons which cause oral cancer in an individual.

Good Oral Hygiene

Researchers have established that there is a strong link between oral health and systemic conditions. It turns out that a healthy mouth can help in maintaining a healthy body. As the bacteria can spread from the oral cavity into the bloodstreams. Good Oral hygiene eventually comes down to good dental habits.

Oral Hygiene
  1. Brushing teeth twice a day from a fluoride toothpaste
  2. Getting your teeth examined by a dentist every six months.
  3. Avoid chewing tobacco.
  4. Quit Smoking
  5. Lower intake of sugar and cold drinks
  6. Floss once a week
  7. Eat a high fiber, low fat, low sugar diet which mainly consists of fruits and vegetables.

There are a lot of teeth whitening kits available in the market all of them claiming to be the best tooth whitener. However, the natural color of teeth is a bit yellow. Straight and white teeth are easily achievable. All one needs to do is take care of their dental health.
